Changes to the frame

I have been away for a few days so I have not had a chance to post also while I was away the frame erectors found there had been a slight error on the truses on the gable ends.

I had not realised that the drawing showed some of the softwood rafters on 2 of the gables and Oak on the main bedroom gable meaning we would have had to close the eves on the softwood gables and if we wanted the Oak exposed on the main bedroom gable the three gables would have looked odd so I agreed to Welsh Oak making up 10 Oak rafters so that all gable ends will have exposed oak in the eves.

SO this has delayed the completion of the frame by a few day and has cost a extra few £100 pounds extra I am glad it all came to light when it did as I feel the end result will look a lot better.

In the mean time I am getting a few labour quotes for the roof with a view to getting started in the next couple of weeks.

Frame nearing completion

As the frame is nearing completion I am turning my attention to the roof.

I have already ordered the tiles from Tudor Roof Tiles and am awaiting a delivery date. We have chosen a mixture of 2 colours, 65% medium antique and the remainder the plain red as with our other buildings on the site.

I also have to arrange the roof insulation and Fermacel for the exposed Oak areas of the roof along with the necessary batons and breathable membrane, hopefully we should see the roof start to go on in the next couple of weeks.

I had John Wilde out from www.oakcleaning.co.uk yesterday for a quote to clean the Oak of the waterstains and the blue marks that occur when the Oak comes into contact with metal, I did not budget for this although I was aware it needed doing so I hope the quote is not to painfull.

Oak in the final stages

Back from the bank holiday break the Oak Frame is in the final stages of completion, there is one gable end and a stack of rafters to be lifted into place and then most of the first floor frame joints will need to be pinned.

I have contacted www.oakcleaning.co.uk to get some idea of the costs to get the frame profesionally cleaned, I was considering doing it myself but it does now look a daunting task so I think it may well be time to get the experts in!

First floor Oak is going up

The lads from Welsh Oak are now putting up the Oak to form first floor which has Oak exposed both externally and internally as opposed to the ground floor which has a brick facad with the only exposed on the inside.

As part of the concession we agreed with the planning department to get planning  we lowered the roof on half the house with dormers, you can see in the picture below the Oak that forms the walls to that part of the house.

Below the Oak trusses are being lifted in place, these trusses will form the master bedroom with vaulted ceiling, walk in wardrobe and on suite bathroom.
